Towards a Cognitive Semantics for Indexical Languages

چکیده
With the Logic of Demonstratives (LD), David Kaplan defines a new formal approach for indexical languages (languages containing expressions as ‘I’, ‘here’, ‘now’), introducing a double indexing into the definition of satisfiability and distinguishing the content and the character of an expression. In particular, the meaning of an indexical is provided by an ad hoc index which depends on the (objective) context of utterance. In this work, we face the problem of indexicals from a cognitive point of view, where we can distinguish between the metaphysical content (“what is said”) – Kaplan’s approach – and the cognitive content (“what is meant”) of indexical expressions. In particular, the meaning of an indexical expression is determined through an index which depends on the cognitive context (the mental representation of the agent) and not on the context of utterance (the objective context). In fact, the content of an expression of the kind ‘I am here now’ depends on the cognitive representation of the world state of the agent rather than on the world state itself. We propose a new logic, called LMSi (Local Models Semantics for Indexicals) which: (i) allows us to distinguish between metaphysical and cognitive content; (ii) allows agents to communicate when knowledge provided by the context of utterance is not available; (iii) under suitable restrictions, can embed LD as a special case.

Lexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs
The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...
متن کاملFormal Semantics of Sign Languages
The paper discusses some issues that arise from research on sign languages in the area of formal semantics. Sign languages provide a unique standpoint to investigate semantic phenomena like donkey anaphora, indexical reference shift, and tense. Moreover, they pose a challenge for semantic theories, since movement verbs display gradient properties (semi-continuous variations with semantic import...
متن کاملTowards an Indexical Model of Situated Language Comprehension for Cognitive Agents in Physical Worlds
We propose a computational model of situated language comprehension based on the Indexical Hypothesis that generates meaning representations by translating amodal linguistic symbols to modal representations of beliefs, knowledge, and experience external to the linguistic system. This Indexical Model incorporates multiple information sources, including perceptions, domain knowledge, and short-te...
متن کاملMirror Neurons, Birdsong, and Human Language: A Hypothesis
THE MIRROR SYSTEM HYPOTHESIS AND INVESTIGATIONS OF BIRDSONG ARE REVIEWED IN RELATION TO THE SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN SYMBOLIC AND LANGUAGE CAPACITY, IN TERMS OF THREE FUNDAMENTAL FORMS OF COGNITIVE REFERENCE: iconic, indexical, and symbolic. Mirror systems are initially iconic but can progress to indexical reference when produced without the need for concurrent stimuli. Develop...
متن کاملIndexicality and left-periphery
According to recent proposals in formal syntax, the left-most position in the C(omplementizer)-layer is dedicated to the representation of the context of utterance (call this hypothesis LP). This idea has had little impact on semantic theories of indexicals. The reason is that indexicals are regarded, after Kaplan’s (1989) Logic of Demonstratives (LD), as directly referential and rigid. However...
